Many might mistakenly believe that a vehicle's battery supplies the power for electrical components. However, the alternator is the true powerhouse under the hood. The battery provides the energy needed to start the motor. But, the alternator produces the energy that supplies the electrical system, which includes keeping the battery charged.
The alternator acts as a miniature generator. The engine turns a wheel that cranks another wheel on the alternator to produce the power. The components are connected by a belt. When headlights seem dimmer than normal, or, when other electrical components seem to malfunction, a failing alternator may be the underlying cause.
Sometimes, the vehicle may fail to start. To determine whether the battery or the alternator is the culprit, simply jump start the vehicle. If the car, SUV or pickup does not remain running, then the alternator is the likely cause. On the other hand, if the vehicle remains running, the battery needs recharging.
